SAET supplies the energy storage system for the Smart Grid at the Port of Savona

The Smart Grid at the Port of Savona has been completed in line with the timeline established by Italy’s National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR), with a deadline set for 30 June 2026.
The project is one of the key initiatives within “Green Ports“, the programme dedicated to the energy transition of Italian ports.

Within this infrastructure, SAET supplied the Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), a key component designed to ensure the availability of renewable energy even during nighttime hours or periods of lower solar production.

The system provided by SAET consists of lithium-ion battery storage units designed to store energy generated from renewable sources and make it continuously available, contributing to the stability and efficiency of the port’s overall energy network.

An integrated energy infrastructure

The BESS is part of a broader project that also includes photovoltaic systems installed on the roofs of six port warehouses, new electrical substations and the upgrade of existing ones.
The integration of these components enables the port to generate, store and distribute energy intelligently.

The operation of the Smart Grid will be coordinated by an Energy Management System (EMS), which will monitor energy generation, storage and consumption in real time, prioritising the use of electricity produced by photovoltaic systems and drawing power from the national grid only when necessary.

From testing to commissioning

With construction works completed, the project has now entered the testing phase, during which the efficiency of the infrastructure and the correct integration of the different installed technologies will be verified.

Once these checks are completed, the Smart Grid will officially become operational, supplying various port facilities, including customs gates, public lighting systems, port administration buildings and charging stations for the electric vehicles of the Port System Authority, which were also developed through PNRR funding.

The commissioning of the network represents a further step in the decarbonisation pathway of the Port of Savona, supporting greater energy efficiency, reduced greenhouse gas emissions, increased energy autonomy and enhanced competitiveness, in line with the objectives of the “Green Ports” project.
